Apologize to all my blog readers and followers here I have been crazily busy and behind in blogging :(
In the last 2 months, I have been focusing on several flush mounted wedding album designs for couples just got married in the summer. Besides, I have been getting many requests and have been photographing family / baby sessions , as well as several maternity portrait sessions for some beautiful mom-to-be . I promise I will post some more images soon :)
On top of that, I'm also busy meeting 2012 clients and it is definitely a much busier year than 2011.

Christine & Parker married earlier in the year with a simple civil ceremony at San Francisco City Hall. When they reflected upon their wedding, they realized the one thing that was missing, photos that portrayed their love and would be cherished for a lifetime. So they approached me to shoot a wedding portrait session for them.

We brainstormed together and chose four iconic locations for the shoot, San Francisco City Hall, Palace of Fine Arts, Grace Cathedral and Golden Gate Bridge. Because both Christine and Parker's families reside in Asia, these photos would give them a glimpse of the wonderful surroundings San Francisco has to offer.

This city is just beautiful and ideal for wedding portraits that no wonder many clients would travel here for destination weddings or even just for wedding portrait session. I feel truly blessed to help my clients retain a keepsake of their love and the beauties of this city through my camera lenses.

From Hong Kong to San Francisco, a touching engagement story......

It was a pleasant surprise when I received a copy of Hong Kong Cosmopolitan Brides magazine featuring my engagement session for Connie and Jack. After graduating from college in California, Connie and Jack moved back to reside in Hong Kong. But when they decided to get marry, San Francisco became their first choice for engagement session. This was a special session for me because the bride Connie is an extraordinary pianist and music educator. Due to her congenital deficiency, she was born with only three full fingers and had undergone a series of orthopedic surgeries to correct her fingers’ disfigurement throughout her childhood. It was only after she finished all the surgeries that Connie began her piano studies. She graduated at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in music, majoring in piano performance. Then she earned her M.A. and Ph.D in ethnomusicology from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).She has received Hong Kong's prestigious 10 Outstanding Young Person's Award in recognition for her efforts and contribution in music education. Connie and Jack are both devoted Christians and the love and connection between them have touched me deeply during this session.

I was ecstatic to photograph a destination wedding in Venice, Italy 2 weeks ago. It was definitely one of the most exciting destination weddings! Maggie and Jaime resides in England but decided to have their wedding in the romantic city of Venice with around 50 guestshttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif. After the ceremony, I accompanied them on a gondola ride and then more portrait around the city, the reception was at Gritti hotel. It was a beautiful day with gorgeous views whichever way I turned. I had great fun at the wedding and loved trotting around the city with my camera !

Sandy & Eric were high school sweethearts that had dated for 10 years before deciding to quietly get married in a civil ceremony. My goal has never changed : Provide the best customer service and provide detail oriented creative work.

When you hear "best customer service" you may think thats just a repeatedly used phrase on all business website, but I hope my perfect score YELP review will change your perception on what a GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE should be.

In order to provide the best qualities of my work , I only take limited number of weddings and commercial clients a year . It is a little overwhelming to me now to handle all of the wedding works and commercial works. It is time for me to make a little adjustment on my price ( so that I can have a life and little more free time to breath :P )

Starting 15th Sept ( all contract signed after 15th Sept) , the wedding package price will be increased by 20% , i.e. the starting price of the wedding package will be increased from $5000 to $6000 .

I wish I could take all the clients that are interested in my art work no matter how much they can afford, but given the free time I have now , just doesn't allow me to do that .

I'm a wedding photographer with high expectation. I have expectation on myself everytime I go out to photograph, no matter is wedding, portrait or babies.

When good doesn't satisfy me anymore, I'm looking for something Extraordinary, at least can wow myself.

Here are couple pictures of Jamie and Randall, they put on their wedding gown and suit again after their honeymoon for this "After Shoot". I love doing after wedding shoot for couple reasons :

First, we never need to rush from locations to locations , we can totally take our time .
Secondly, we can go to the location where it is very difficult to go on the wedding day, may be it is far away from ceremony and reception site.
One more reason is that I can totally be creative in terms of picking locations and time of the day to shoot.

The first pic is my favorite of that shoot, when I saw this scene, I told Jamie and Randall, "I am not leaving without an awesome image !"

My upcoming workshop date has been confirmed , 8/22 Sunday . The class format and content will be same as the one I have before, 7 hours from 9:30 to 5:30pm with a lunch break. In the morning, we will go through theories and get familiar with your camera, after lunch, we will go outside to practice. I have a lot of tips to share with you, since it is an intimate workshop, you can ask whatever you want , about wedding shoot, about business, about how to get in to the industry :) Willing to share everything with you.

Photography needs a lot of practice and a lot of thinking behind, what I'm teaching you , is the fundamental things you MUST know to get it started, and most importantly is I'm going to show you a systematic way to practice, not just shoot a lot without purpose. When you get out of my workshop, you know what exactly you need to do with you camera and know what to practice to get better !

Do you prefer to spend months or years to try to figure out the features of the camera/lens by yourself or spend 7 hrs straight to get your hands dirty and ready to shoot some awesome images for your friends and family ??

Last Saturday had a lot of fun teaching this 7 hours introduction to digital photography class at my gallery in Belmont. 8 students were all excited to get to know their camera better and get some hands on practice .

Like the previous classes, was held at my gallery . In the morning, after we had breakfast, we spent the whole morning from 9:30am - 1:00pm learning about theory and get familiar with their own equipment . The theory part include all the basic of photography... like aperture , shutter speed, iso, lens characterists/usage, composition, depth of field, flash .... . Then we all have lunch together.

Theory means nothing without practice, so after lunch , we went out for some hands on practice from 1:00pm - 4:00pm . We all practiced and applied what we learned in the morning using our gear. We practiced the combination of shutter speed/aperture to archive different result that we want. Everyone was required to use M (manual) mode to practice.

I designed this class to only accept 8 students because I have to make sure every student got enough attentions from me and ask questions and guidance when they need.

This is definitely a photoshoot session I was looking forward to for a long time. If you have been following my blog, you will know Carla, a beautiful bride I shot 2 years ago. We originally planned to photograph her pregnancy pictures in the beginner of June. However, we couldn't do it , why ?? because this little kid came out 2 and a half week earlier than the doctor expected :) Instead of a pregnancy shoot, now we are doing a baby shoot for the 3.5 weeks Cole, absolutely adorable. Because Carla's family flew from Florida to visit Carla and Jamie, so we also did a family shoot after the baby shoot . What a beautiful family.

Embarcadero , Bay Bridge, Golden Gate Bridge ... you won't feel any any surprise on the above photo shooting locations, they are probably the most common locations wedding couples do their engagement portrait. Well, for me, I will never try to shoot the same thing again and again just to get the job done. If I go the same location, I'll push myself to be even more creative in the shoot. 2010-06-04 Digital Photography Beginner Workshop on 7/17

This year has been very busy so far as you can see from my blog posts and my schedule. But I still want to spend some time teaching and share my knowledge and 18 years of photography experience with those of you wants to learn DSLR. My upcoming workshop date has been confirmed , 7/17 Saturday . The class format and content will be same as the one I have before, 7 hours from 9:30 to 5:30pm with a lunch break. In the morning, we will go through theories and get familiar with your camera, after lunch, we will go outside to practice. I have a lot of tips to share with you, since it is an intimate workshop, you can ask whatever you want , about wedding shoot, about business, about how to get in to the industry :) Willing to share everything with you.

Photography needs a lot of practice and a lot of thinking behind, what I'm teaching you , is the fundamental things you MUST know to get it started, and most importantly is I'm going to show you a systematic way to practice, not just shoot a lot without purpose. When you get out of my workshop, you know what exactly you need to do with you camera and know what to practice to get better !

Do you prefer to spend months or years to try to figure out the features of the camera/lens by yourself or spend 7 hrs straight to get your hands dirty and ready to shoot some awesome images for your friends and family ??

More images from the fashion shoot for Boutique White Petals . As you can see , I started using a bigger format images for my blog, I just want to see my images in a bigger size so that you can see all the details and appreciate the quality of the images.

When I did this fashion shoot, I didn't use any flash or reflector , all shot in natural light.

Actually on all the photoshoot assignments, no matter is wedding or fashion, I first select the location that with the best lighting , and then focus on how to position the model and interact with the models to get the best facial expression and balance of light in the images. This reduce my post production time tremendously, and thats one of the major reason you see me post a lot of READY TO RELEASE images pretty fast. I'm a photographer, not a photoshop junkie :)

DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING ???

Are you spending months trying to figuring out what to you with your new DSLR camera or even what to practice ?

Does it mean anything to you even you own some nice and expensive gear ( just to show off ??) but the picture quality is not as nice as your friend who has cheaper equipment but just have skills, know how to use different lens and know what to practice? I always love traveling Japan, have been there for many times, but to me, every time was a special experience. Not too worried where to visit, I just want to spend some good time with my old friends and have some good chat. :) So fortunate have many Japanese friends there and never have to pay for hotel :P

I cannot say in words how much I love Toshi and Yukari's wedding. It is a total authentic and traditional wedding in a Shrine in Japan , Nezu. I felt like I was in a movie. All the details, the atmosphere , the shrine, the reception, the dress were all incredibly elegant and beautiful. It is certainly one of my BEST wedding experience.

Toshi has been always been a great friend of mine since we met in MBA school 7 years ago in California. I always look up to him and lot of things to learn from him in terms of how to be a great guy. About 2 years ago he went back to Japan to work and met this beautiful girl Yukari and got married in Nezu where they live now.

I wasn't the official photographer on their wedding, Toshi reminded me don't bring any gear and just totally enjoy , my role was just be a good friend and to have fun in their wedding. I couldn't help and I brought minimal equipment : a 5d mark II body and 2 lens ( 24-70 f/2.8 and the 50mm f/1.2 , with NO flash ) ,, took these pictures here and there for fun purpose and as their wedding gift :)

Brother !! Congratulations again !!!

It was a short but super exciting engagement shooting trip to New York City. I left San Francisco on Friday night, took a red-eye flight , arrived NY Saturday morning with my videographer , shot in the afternoon and came back on Sunday evening.

I was beyond thrilled to get the trust from Meredith and Michael to hire me and to fly me to east coast to shoot their engagement and their upcoming wedding in July in Martha's Vineyard, MA. While I'm still editing their engagement pictures, want to see some sneak peek images ?

Be generous using big frame ! 16"x20" is just about right to hang on the wall

Two customized matte for mounting these 2 images. Exciting !

When I finished the post production of this image, I knew I am going present this picture on a customized vertical frame with a horizontal opening, with a lot of negative space (white space) at the bottom to emphasize the impact of this image

For this cherry blossom dreamy scene, I love this panoramic 18"x12" size matte, It exaggerates the whole view, like we always like to watch wide screen TV :)

Framing done, lets take a picture (PROUDLY) before delivered to Annalisa's parent.

Art Piece ? Part 1 of 2 ??? So what is it all about ?

In the coming 2 posts , I 'm going to bring you to the production of a portrait session. It is not just the behind the scene footage like I did for wedding photography, but what I really want to show you , are .....

Part 1 ( this post) :

** 2-3 of my favorite images in a portrait session of the beautiful eight year old Annalisa .

** A short behind the scene footage ( 2 mins ) of how this children portrait session was done in a park in Sunnyvale. With a Canon 5D mark II , 50mm f/1.2 lens , a reflector and NO flash.

Part 2 ( next post ) :

** A little production process and my thoughts in presenting the images to her parent the best it they will look . When I say "presenting" , it is not about how fancy I make the CD cover to be, not what box do I use to deliver the print to her, it is about a piece of art work that they will keep forever . Honestly, no matter how good a picture is if they are only going to sit in your computer hard drive forever, or they are going to be shared on facebook and be forgotten in like 2 weeks, it doesn't really mean much. Annalisa can only be 8 year old once (365 days if you really need to be picky on me !!)

San Francisco Children Photographer - Chung Li ???
Haha , don't get me wrong I'm not suddenly switching from a wedding photographer to a children photographer , but well, if you have been following my blog, you realize I love to photograph kids during the wedding and in the low wedding seasons or for friends' kids just for fun. I just love photographing people.

Here is a sneak peek image of a portrait session I did for the cutest Annalisa last week in a park in Sunnyvale at around 5-6pm. The reason I love this picture so much is that when I am looking at this picture, I just feel like Annalisa is also looking at me, I can feel her soul. I have more stunning images coming from this portrait session and even a behind the scene video footage of how this image was created . Oh, and forget to mention, I AM developing another website , it is going to be a subdivision of Chung Li Photography for Children and Family Portrait, I want to make it unique, very artistic, stay tuned !!! My goal is to have it up and running in a a month or two :) currently, I am still thinking the name of the site, any thoughts ? welcome to email me or leave me a comment here !!!

Chloe and Won are very good friend of my former wine making couple Cecil and David. Cecil and David love their pictures so much that we took back in November (here is the link), raved about me to their friends and wanted their good friends to have me to photography them. I met the mom-to-be Chloe about the end of last yr about the shoot, Chloe told me their wedding pictures by the other photographer when they got married were horrible and they really really wanted to have some pictures taken again before the baby due in April, how exciting :). However I was too busy traveling at the end of last yr followed by the trip to Hong Kong and Las Vegas in February and March this yr, we finally did it last week !!!!

Chloe and Won have some ideas in their mind already, they want view of golden gate bridge, they want some nature scene with bench and grass.. and also with their lovely dog Max :)

Couple days before the shoot, we talked on the phone finalizing the location we are going to shoot and also the outfit options.....we came up with an elegant evening dress formal wear and the casual engagement shoot style.

Last Sunday I jumped on a plane to Vegas for WPPI 2010-- an annual Wedding & Portrait Photographer International convention. This yr is my 2nd year going cause last yr was AWESOME !!!

There were over 13,000 photographers there from ALL OVER THE WORLD for different classes , trade show and parties, it is such a great opportunity to connect with so many talented photographers and industry friends .

One of the highlights of the trip was that I had 2 images received the Award of Excellence in the annual 16"x20" Print Competition !! ( I submitted 5 images ) One in the "Bride and Groom" category and one in the "Bride" category. YAY !! I am still feeling excited and surprised to win these international print awards !!

My 2010 Wedding Season had official STARTED !!!!

Diane and Rodney's wedding was a wedding I really looking forward to. The ceremony and the reception were both held in Casa Real at the Ruby Hill Winery in Pleasanton. I still remembered about Aug 2009 ,Rodney contacted me about their wedding , after they visited my gallery in Belmont, they signed me up almost immediately . They are really down to earth and genuine couple and everyone could feel their cuteness when they interact with each other , my ideal couple !

One more reason I was so excited about this wedding was because Rodney and Diane hired one of my favorite floral designer in town and also one of my preferred vendors, Nicole Ha !!

I still remember when Diane met me at my gallery, she asked me with a shy voice ...."Chung.... can you take a picture of me with my soccer ball ??????" , yes, Diane was a soccer player .. you will see that we have incorporated some portrait pictures with the SOCCER theme :) how fun :)

Congratulations to Diane and Rodney, have fun in your honeymoon !!!

2009-12-29 MINIMALISTIC wedding albums design concept

Mentioned in the last post how much I adore the flush mount leather bound wedding albums from Leather Craftsmen , I am just so excited to receive Jayni and Patrick's wedding album before Christmas, they were like my own Christmas gift.

The bigger one you see here is the 11"x14" distressed brown leather bound album, the smaller one is the parent album which is exactly the same in design and material, just smaller, 9"x7".

Not only I just brought in Leather Craftsmen as one of our album making vendor, but I also changed the whole design layout in all the albums I'm designing from now on .

So, whats the new design concept ? one word : "Minimalistic". You probably saw some of my "Magazine style" albums before which you see more number of images on a page, pictures over pictures and pictures over a background with different opacity things like that. However I started to feel the magazine style was a little too "busy" , I figured every image that we selected to put in an album deserves a whole page or as much attention as possible on each of them.

You see some of the pictures I attached below, you will see fewer images on every page, on average one or two pictures in one page. Also another design concept that I apply is using more "Negative Space", that means I use more white space in background to draw more readers' attention to the image itself. The result is a more clean, contemporary , artsy and fashion cataloge style album book. Loving it ! I think is the perfect way to demonstrate my work.

I know in this internet age /facebook age we can easily share pictures online and keeping all the images in a DVD, however, I think be able to hold a physical wedding album in your hands, feel the leather, flip through every page and this feeling just can't be replaced by any form of the digital media.

I am pretty picky on all the wedding albums I design and order for my clients. I want to make sure all album covers and pages are perfectly printed and binded for the couples to pass to their children and children's children. The albums are not for them, they are really for their generations.

In order to provide the best quality albums I could provide to the client, I'm constantly looking for album products and seeking the best in the industry. I recently just added one of the best album company , Leather Craftsmen , to my list. Just received Janelle & Russell's 11"x17" super size album/with Metal Cover from my lab.
It's never too big for a wedding album, is like we always like a bigger LCD TV. It is just too awesome to flip thru every page on your lap with 11"x34" of images (full spread open). I especially like this wider format as it is just FUN to enjoy all the wedding images this way.

I attached some pictures with a traditional 12"x12" album together to compare the size difference .

Right on time for Ayesha 's Birthday !

I just hand delivered this album to Ayesha and Matt in San francisco , on Ayesha's birthday. I originally planned to ship this to her, but considering the shipping cost and I will be in San Francisco area on that day , I decided to hand deliver this beautiful album to them and visit their new born baby !!!!

This album I started using a more simplicity design and want to emphasize more on every single picture.

Nothing too crazily fancy on the cover, we used the classic black leather cover and have their name embossed on the cover. Beautifully done.

Right On Time for Christmas !
Heather and Tom had their destination wedding in Martha's Vineyard earlier in Sept this year, while they are still selecting photos for their own album, they really wanted to get 2 parent albums done for their parents as a Christmas gift.

This is a 10"x10" hard cover album, 30 pages, lay flat design and all pages are laminated . Very decent and affordable parent album options !

Bic and Henry's wedding in the Hakone Japanese Garden no doubt one of my favourite weddings in this year, look at all the detail decoration ,the color combination, the wedding dress and the 2.5 carats wedding ring , you will understand what I mean. We have all been looking forward to this wedding for so long, Bic (the cutest dentist) has spent a lot of effort on the details, the butterfly and bird cage theme was perfectly put together by the awesome florist, Laura of Poppy Petal Works

I began shooting Bic's preparation in the Presidential Suite at Four Season Hotel in Palo Alto . Love it, plenty of light coming from the full length glass window, best spot for Bic's individual portrait. After we did some portrait of Bic and Henry in the hotel area, then we went straight to the ceremony/reception venue - Hakone Japanese Garden in Saratoga. This was my 2nd time shooting in this location this year, still feeling very excited, this venue is just so special and has a lot of beautiful scene and great details for portrait.

We shot this Fun portrait TWO days after Carla knew she was pregnant for 6 weeks. Carla knew she was pregnant on Friday and called me immediately and we did this portrait on Sunday.

Carla and Jamie were just so excited to know the pregnancy news and couldn't wait to share this to their parent ... in a fun way.

Is the Big Belly those kinda pregnancy pictures a wonderful way to capture this important journey in their life ?? Sure, no doubt.

HOWEVER, before we even capture the physical changes in a woman's body, the ANTICIPATION, the EXCITEMENT RIGHT NOW is such an amazing moment for them to remember in the rest of their life , I think is very meaningful to all the parents-to-be !

Alright, this is the first time I post my sister's (AMY LI) pictures here :) The reason you rarely see me post pictures of me and my sister is because we live really far away from each other ... How far ??? I live in California, and she lives in UK, yes, that far !

We planned to meet up in the beginning of this year and want to have a fun trip together, WE MADE IT, we just finished our wonderful trip together in Maui, Hawaii , together with Andrew and Florence you saw in the previous post.

I like to photograph my sister, she is a good subject to me, she always follow what I said without complaining :) I specifically selected this red-orange SaRong for her in Maui, I know it is going to pop in the picture, the blue one was also bought in Maui, to match with her white tank top .

What is the best way for a married couple to celebrate their 1st year wedding anniversary ? Spending a week in Maui sounds like an awesome idea, and thats what Andrew and Florence just did !! And hows the feeling shooting portrait in Maui ?? It is absolutely BEYOND awesome ! All the tropical plants, all the beautiful beaches, magnificent scene everywhere.
